So building off of the last post...sex outside of marriage isn't right because you have not been joined and sealed by God in marriage. The next reason sex outside of marriage isn't a good idea is because you are not protected. As with every other rule God has, He is not tying to give you a hard time He is trying to protect you. Protect you from who? The devil!
I wrote a post a week or so back about identity. How the devil from the beginning has been trying to slander the name of God and slander the image of God in us. Now when it comes to sex the devil has the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Sex is the only act that brings to people together as one flesh and spirit. An act that was meant to be the celebration of the two God had created in His image becoming one. Both for pleasure and to multiply humans.
So there is no doubt that the devil jumped on this one as soon as he could. Because sex is a spiritual act that means the spirit world is involved. When you have sex with the person you are married to it brings glory to God's truth. When you have sex with someone you are not married to it brings glory to the slander of God's truth, that is the devil. The devil has never missed an act of un-marital sex yet!
I say un-marital as apposed to pre-marital because there is a lot of garbage done on the marital bed that is not within God's truth. So let's just say sex outside of God's truth...married or unmarried. The devil is able to participate. Now I know that this may sound a little shocking to some of you and maybe even crude. But we must take the act of sex this seriously.
"Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed is undefiled. But fornicators and adulterers God will judge." Hebrew 13:4
The word for undefiled in this verse is the Greek word amiantos meaning not deformed, polluted or corrupted. So this confirms that all marriage in God's truth is honorable and not corrupted by the devil. The devil has no access to sex within marriage. But then there is an added stipulation in the second half of the verse. Even if you are married you can still pollute the marriage bed by inappropriate sex. Committing adultery or fornication defiles. Now it kind of seems a little redundant to say both adultery and fornication. To make more sense of this we must look at who was reading this letter originally.
Hebrews is believed to be written about 65AD. The Roman Empire was full of pagan temples and their prostitutes{male and female} as well as regular prostitutes. Now it is my understanding that if you had sex with one of the temple prostitutes is was not considered adultery because it was worship to the gods and goddesses of the day. To have sex with a regular prostitute was no big deal either because it wasn't another man's wife. Adultery was having sex with another man's wife only. So who ever wrote the book of Hebrews {we don't know who did} was covering all the bases in defining a undefiled marriage bed.
Which brings us to a perfect example of how the devil has tried to involve himself in all things sexual. Pagan ritual sex was huge all through the old testament and new testament. Any pagan religion to this day worships particular gods and goddesses of sexuality and fertility. The devil has most certainly used sex to his own slanderous and destructive purposes. But suppose you are not a satanist or worshipper of the goddess Aphrodite; is the devil still a participant of your un-marital sex? Short answer: YES.
"Everything is permissible for me--but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me--but I will not be mastered by anything...Food is for the stomach and the stomach for food...but the body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord..." 1 Cor. 6:12-13
The Greek word for beneficial in this verse is symphero meaning to bear or bring together. Think of the word symphony. Different instruments joined together in harmony. This is what we were discussing earlier. God joining two people together in the context of marriage. The verse goes on to say "I will not be mastered by anything". Sex should not be our master folks. It is a lie from the devil that sexual freedom is outside of the truth of God. Sexual freedom is the harmonious symphony within God's truth which is marriage. Anything outside of that brings bondage and destruction.
Think of all the bondage the devil has caused in the world of sex. Prostitution, sexual abuse, pedophilia, bestiality, gender issues, pornography, lust, a driving NEED to have sex. These are all perversions of the devil. This is the devil having mastery over your sexuality. That is why the verse goes on to compare the sexual drive to eating. Yes, you do have body parts that were made for sex. But just as glutting yourself into morbid obesity is not harmonious with your body neither is sexual immorality. Let's read a little further...
"Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and join them to a prostitute? Never!...Flee sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside the body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit...Therefore honor God with your body." 1 Cor. 6:15-16,18-20
Now the Greek word for prostitute in this verse is porne meaning a female that indulges in sex outside of marriage not necessarily for money. It comes from the root word pornos which is the male equivalent of what I just stated. The both come from the Greek word pornia which is a general term for fornication or sexual immorality. In fact where this verse says sexual immorality is the Greek word pornia. This is where we get the term pornography.
There is not a part of your body that does not have spirit in it. See how Paul describes sexual immorality as sinning against your body. You are slandering the image of God in you. You are slandering the image of God in the other person. Your image is unprotected and the devil is slashing you to bits. Have you ever wondered why people that have had multiple sexual partners are so broken? They have been attacked; many times over. I'm not talking about rape. I am talking about the abuse of that person's spirit. They have not been loved in any of those sexual situations. They have been used and abused. And even if you are having sex outside of marriage in the name of love you are still abusing that person's spirit. Because remember real love can not be outside of God's truth.
I'm not saying that you don't have strong feelings for that person but we need to keep our feelings in line with the truth of God. That is why he also gave us a will. The world is in a bunch of crap by doing things that feel right. And in this case what feels right has given the devil the permission to receive glory from your sexual encounter. That is why we are not to go through life according to what we feel. We are go lead our lives according to God's truth and adjust our feelings accordingly by our will and the enabling power of the Holy Spirit. So don't offer yours or anyone else's spirit to the will of the devil. You are subjecting your spirit and the others to the bondage of the enemy. You are not loving that person in doing so. Plain and simple.
So if you are in a serious relationship with someone. Say you have been living with them{and all that entails} for awhile. Seriously discuss marriage. It's not too late. You aren't tainted. It doesn't have to be a big white wedding or whatever. Go to the court house if you have too. But I honestly believe that you will be more protected in the spirit realm as a married couple. It is a new start and commitment. God glues you together. God glues the kids {if there are any} together and to you. I also believe that it seals you off from any past sexual partners. Think of it as a little energy field that get wrapped around you and your family. Not to say the "energy field" is fool proof. God will always keep it there, but men and women{and rebellious kids} may not. But it is so much better to use all we can {God} to make our relationships fortified and protected from the enemy.
Next we will move on to how sex outside of marriage damages your spirit.
